Julio is 36 years old, and James is 11 years old. In how many years will Julio's age be twice James's age?

Let x be the number of years.

36 + x = 2(11 + x)
36 + x = 22 + 2x
36 + x - x = 22 + 2x - x
36 = 22 + x
36 - 22 = 22 - 22 + x
14 = x

So in 14 years Julio will be 50 and James will be 25.

Thanks, MAS1. I always prefer an elegant algebraic solution.

In the book, this is a 5th grade problem. Can anyone find a way to solve it without algebra?

Best answer without using formulas:

We start at 11 - 36

36/2=18 so,

18 - 36+7 = 18 - 43

43/2=22.5 so,

23 - 43+5 = 23 - 48

48/2=24 so,

24 - 49

49/2= 24.5 so,

25 - 50

Done. In 14 years.
