08-03-2007 #2 Anne M Guest   Posts: n/a An expression in mathematics which does not have meaning and so which is not assigned an interpretation. For example, division by zero is undefined in the field of real numbers. This is also an interesting page, which gives a longer description of what "undefined" really means (or doesn't mean!): http://www.mathnstuff.com/math/spoke...n.htmBasically my understanding of it is that you can't divide by zero, because to do so makes no sense. You can't divide a pie, for instance, by "nothingness." So if someone asked you to divide a pie into zero slices, there's no answer for how much of the pie one slice would be. So in describing how much of the pie it would be, we can only call it "undefined."I hope I helped!! mathworld.wolfram.com
