Dividing x^2 + kx + 4 by x - 1 gives a remainder of 4 + k + 1.

Dividing x^2 + kx + 4 by x + 1 gives a remainder of 4 - k + 1.

Setting the two remainders equal to each other gives:
4 + k + 1 = 4 - k + 1
5 + k = 5 - k
k = -k
2k = 0
k = 0

If you plug k = 0 into the dividend you get x^2 + 4.
Dividing that by either x - 1 or x + 1 gives a remainder of 5.
