 07-13-2007 #2 Mr.T Guest   Posts: n/a I get X = 1/3 but been a LOOONG time!
 07-13-2007 #3 Caesarion Guest   Posts: n/a Combine like variables on each side of the = operator:2x + 29/12 = 32x = 7/12Then isolate x:x = 7/24or x = 0.292
 07-13-2007 #4 ponusjoe42 Guest   Posts: n/a It should be x +(5/3)+x+(3/4)=3.then it can converted to 2X=3-(5/3)-(3/4)which is 2x+ 3-(1.67)-(.75)which is 2x= .58which is x= .29Check it this way:.29+1.67+.29+.75=3You're welcome
07-13-2007 #5 pinnapple sponge cake Guest   Posts: n/a x+5/3+x+3/4=3 original problem2x+20/12+9/12=3 find common denominator2x+29/12=3 add fractions24x+29=36 mulitiply everything by 12 to rid of fractions24x=7 subract 29 from both sidesx=7/24 divide by 24 on both sides the problem with koolio's answer is that when she tried to find the common denominator of 5/3 and 3/4, she multiplied the 3 of 3/4 by 5 instead of 3
07-13-2007 #6 Scion   Join Date: Nov 2006 Posts: 437 do you mean $(x+\frac{5}{3}+x+\frac{3}{4})=3$? IF so simplify to $(2x+\frac{20}{12}+\frac{9}{12})=\frac{36}{12}$ then simplify to$(2x+\frac{29}{12})=\frac{36}{12}$ then simplify to $2x=\frac{7}{12}$ then the answer is $x=\frac{7}{24}$ which can also be $x=.2196666666666666$ I am going to lock this to prevent spam __________________ Last edited by Scion; 07-13-2007 at 01:03 PM..

 07-13-2007 #8 powerns24 Guest   Posts: n/a Mr.T has it right Rewrite the left first 2x + 2 1/3 =3 Minus both sides by -2 1/3 2x=2/3 divide both sides by 2 x=1/3
 07-13-2007 #9 josephadel_3 Guest   Posts: n/a First Simplify to 2x + 5/3 + 3/4 = 32x + 20/12 + 9/12 = 32x + 29/12 = 36/12 (3 is the same as 36/12)subtract 29/12 from 36/12and you get 2x = 7/12now multiply both sides by the recipricol of 2, which is 1/2 and you get:x = 7/24
 07-13-2007 #10 whoawhoawoowa Guest   Posts: n/a x + 5/3 + x + 3/4 =3Combine like terms2x + 29/12 = 3Isolate the variable2x +29/12 -29/12 = 3 - 29/122x + 0 = 7/122x/2 = (7/12)/2x = 7/24
