Default How to make the number higher when doing algebra?

When doing algebra how do you make the number higher on the keyboard??? example 3xWhat I mean is x^3-so how do I make the number three appear higher ( and smaller) than the rest of the letters/numbers??

if your talking about 3 to the power of x then just use the carrot symbol...... 3^x!!
