 08-12-2007 #33 Temperal Guest   Posts: n/a Grr... I posted this in the Mathcounts Problem Solving Thread at AoPS. A rope is attached to a point at the bottom of a right circular cylinder. The rope is then wound around the cylinder four times before it is attached to a point at the top of the cylinder which is directly above the point where the rope is attached at the bottom. If the cylinder is 10 meters tall and has a radius of 3 meters, how long is the rope?

Unrolling the rope says that the rope is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with height 10 and base $24\pi$. Pythagorean Theorem: $\sqrt{576\pi^2+100}=\sqrt{4(144\pi^2+25)}=2\sqrt{1 44\p^2+25}$.
